The Montana MVD knowledge test is the gateway between you and a learner's license. It's 33 questions — longer than the national norm of 25, shorter than many 40-question states — and you need to get 27 right (82%) to pass. Montana's MVD will not tell you which questions you missed if you fail; you only get the verdict. The good news: at just $5, it's the cheapest permit application fee in the country.

Montana's 495-question bank breaks into six categories. Traffic laws (41.6%) and safety (29.7%) dominate — those two alone account for over 70% of the practice pool. Road signs add another 17.4%. Nail those three categories and you've covered nearly 89% of what the test draws from.

These are the patterns that sink first-time Montana test-takers. At 33 questions with a 27-correct bar, a single category you glossed over can flip a pass into a fail.

Reading alone reliably tops out around 60% on the real test. The students who pass first try use three loops: read once, drill once, listen once. That's it.

05

Passing the knowledge test gets you a learner's license — not the freedom to drive alone. Montana's GDL rules for under-18 drivers are moderately strict, but the restrictions lift earlier than in most states: after just one year or on your 18th birthday, whichever comes first.

Reading alone tops out around 60% on the real Montana permit test. The students who pass first try memorize the cheat sheet, take the 40-question practice exam, then listen to a full test on YouTube the night before. Three loops. That's it.

Note: this is a study tool, not an official MVD resource. Always confirm requirements with your state's DMV before scheduling your test.
